KSEF Agriculture Project
Abstract
Livestock require a constant supply of clean water for proper growth, milk production, reproduction, and disease prevention. Many farmers face challenges such as water shortages, overflowing troughs, labor-intensive watering routines, and inability to monitor water consumption.
This project develops a Solar Smart Livestock Watering System that automatically monitors water levels, refills troughs when necessary, records animal drinking patterns, and operates entirely on solar energy. The system reduces labor costs, prevents water wastage, and improves livestock management through real-time monitoring.
Introduction
Livestock such as cattle, goats, sheep, rabbits, and poultry require regular access to water.
Challenges faced by farmers include:
- Water troughs running dry.
- Overflowing tanks.
- High labor costs.
- Poor monitoring of animal water consumption.
- Inconsistent water availability.
This project provides an automated solution.
Objectives
Main Objective
To design and construct a solar-powered livestock watering system capable of automatically supplying water and recording drinking patterns.
Specific Objectives
- Monitor water levels continuously.
- Automatically refill troughs when water levels fall.
- Record animal drinking frequency.
- Operate using solar energy.
- Display water usage data.
System Overview
6
The system continuously checks the water level.
When the water drops below a preset level:
- Water pump starts automatically.
- Tank refills.
- Water level returns to normal.
- Pump switches off automatically.
Animal visits are recorded and stored.
Materials Required
| Component | Quantity |
|---|---|
| Arduino Uno | 1 |
| Ultrasonic Water Level Sensor | 1 |
| Flow Sensor | 1 |
| Solar Panel (20W–50W) | 1 |
| 12V Battery | 1 |
| Charge Controller | 1 |
| Water Pump | 1 |
| Relay Module | 1 |
| LCD Display | 1 |
| RFID Reader | 1 |
| RFID Animal Tags | Several |
| Water Tank | 1 |
| Water Trough | 1 |
| Pipes | As required |
Working Principle
Step 1: Water Monitoring
The ultrasonic sensor measures water depth inside the trough.
Normal Condition
Water Level > 60%
Pump OFF
Low Water Condition
Water Level < 30%
Pump ON
Step 2: Automatic Refilling
5
When water level becomes low:
- Arduino receives signal.
- Relay activates pump.
- Water enters trough.
- Sensor continuously monitors filling.
When water reaches maximum level:
Pump OFF
This prevents overflow.
Step 3: Animal Drinking Records
Each animal wears an RFID ear tag.
When an animal approaches:
- RFID reader identifies animal.
- Drinking event recorded.
- Date and time saved.
Example Record:
| Animal ID | Time |
|---|---|
| Cow 001 | 8:30 AM |
| Cow 003 | 9:05 AM |
| Cow 001 | 11:15 AM |
This helps farmers monitor:
- Sick animals
- Dehydrated animals
- Feeding behavior
