Anti-Bacterial Properties of Cactus Gel and Moringa Seeds in Water Purification


Introduction

Access to microbiologically safe water remains a global issue. Natural materials such as cactus gel and Moringa seeds are known for their antibacterial and coagulation properties. This project investigates the synergistic antibacterial properties of cactus gel and Moringa seeds in reducing microbial contamination in water, aiming to provide a sustainable solution for improving water safety.


Statement of the Problem

Contaminated water is a leading cause of waterborne diseases globally. Many rural communities cannot access chemical disinfectants or advanced water treatment methods. This study seeks to evaluate how a combination of cactus gel and Moringa seeds can effectively kill harmful bacteria in water using natural resources.


Objective

To study the antibacterial properties of cactus gel and Moringa seeds and their combined effect in reducing bacterial contamination in water.


Apparatus

  • Fresh cactus pads (for mucilage extraction)
  • Dried Moringa seeds
  • Contaminated water samples (e.g., pond water or artificially contaminated water)
  • Beakers (500 mL)
  • Measuring cylinders
  • Sterile pipettes
  • Nutrient agar plates for bacterial growth analysis
  • Incubator
  • Stirring rod
  • Cheesecloth or fine mesh

Procedure

1. Preparation of Materials

  • Cactus Gel: Extract mucilage from fresh cactus pads by peeling and blending the inner gel with a small amount of water. Filter through cheesecloth to obtain clear mucilage.
  • Moringa Seed Powder: Dry Moringa seeds and grind them into a fine powder.

2. Water Treatment

  • Prepare three samples of contaminated water (labeled A, B, and C):
    • Sample A: Add 10 mL of cactus gel.
    • Sample B: Add 0.5 g of Moringa seed powder.
    • Sample C: Add both 10 mL of cactus gel and 0.5 g of Moringa seed powder.
  • Stir each sample for 5 minutes and let them settle for 30 minutes.

3. Bacterial Analysis

  • Take 1 mL of water from each treated sample and streak it onto nutrient agar plates.
  • Incubate the plates at 37°C for 24 hours.
  • Observe and count bacterial colonies in each sample.

Observation

  • The water treated with both cactus gel and Moringa seeds showed the least bacterial growth.
  • Sample A (cactus gel) and Sample B (Moringa seeds) individually reduced bacterial colonies, but not as effectively as their combination.

This method offers a natural, sustainable, and accessible solution for improving water safety in areas lacking advanced water treatment facilities.
